Quick-witted, creative thinker, exemplary problem solver and colorful were among the qualities of this year’s event honoree Don Gaughenbaugh. A Frosty Valley member since 1983, Don was a Pittsburgh area native who graduated from Bloomsburg University where he met his match in a Coal Region girl, Kathleen, his wife of 42 years. Don served on FVCC’s board for several years, including as president, where his impact was significant, spearheading the transition to the current privately-owned Frosty Valley Resort. An accomplished businessman, his work experience began as an estimator in the industrial mining machinery industry. It progressed over nearly four decades with Kennedy Van Saun, Svedala and culminated as President of Metso Minerals. Prior to retiring in 2015, managing both the company’s Pittsburgh and Danville offices concurrently, his extensive business travels took him throughout the U.S. and internationally to many countries including Finland, Brazil, India, China, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and South Africa. Don was also a seminar consultant at the Zeigler School of Business at Bloomsburg University where he enjoyed sharing his experience with students. In addition to being a voracious reader, he loved golf and the Pittsburgh Steelers. His greatest pleasure in life, however, was spending time with his wife, family, and friends. No better words could be used to describe Don than those of Greek politician and general Pericles….“what you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”
